Studies - Italy

During my trip to Italy I had some time to do some studies beside sorting out all my legal stuff. finally had the time to take photos, sorry for the quality of the images...

Cool stuff! I have a little question about studies. Are studies from images not as helpful as studies from life are?

I am not saying they are not helpful, they are different.
When you do studies from photos, you already have the composition / values / etc. set up and its really easy to fall into the habit to only copy the photo.
When you do studies from life, you have to understand the subject matter to achieve a successful result and thats the most important part.

Well, that totally makes sense! So when drawing from reference (image) it would be useful to draw the same thing (say a butterfly) but in a different pose/perspective?
